Museum Trust Board likely to become smaller
BY
CLARE BARRY
Local transitional committees . have agreed to the Museum Trust Board’s proposals for the board’s representation and funding after local government reorganisation, including a reduction from 15 to 11 members.
The proposals will now go to the Local Government Commission for consideration at a meeting on October 26. There will be six local body representatives on the new board, with four appointed by the Christchurch City Council and two from the wider councils.
One representative each will be appointed by the University of Canterbury, the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand,
the Ngai Tahu Trust Board, the Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers Association, and the Association of Friends of the Canterbury Museum. All representatives will be appointed by their respective bodies, instead of being elected.
The board’s method of levying contributing local authorities will remain unchanged.
Restoration
The Museum Trust Board has picked a firm to do stage two of the Canterbury Museum restoration.
The firm has not yet been advised of its successful tender for the work, estimated to cost $904,700. Stage two includes the
addition of a floor above the Victorian village to provide an extra 1200 sq m of display space, while the Canterbury village will be made into a bigger display of the European settlement.
The money will come from the restoration fund, a Lottery Board grant and a loan.
Assistant A promotions and administration assistant for the museum should be appointed by early next year. The job will be a combination of two new positions called for in a report on organisation and staffing at the museum.
Mr Trotter said the position would be advertised nationwide as soon as possible.
