Smashing farewell

NZPA-Reuter Paris The triple world cycling champion, Jeannie Longo, smashed the women’s 10km indoor world record by more than 18s yesterday in a sentimental last ride of her career in France.

Longo clocked 12min 54.26 s on the Palais Omnisports track, recapturing the mark she lost last October to Tea Vikstedt-Nyman, of Finland who was timed at 13:12.53 in Moscow. The Frenchwoman, the outstanding female rider of all-time, will bow out of the sport holding all 11 world records between 3km and one hour.
