AUSTRALIA Wall St gives lead to wary investors

NZPA-AAP Sydney A stronger close on Wail Street led Australia’s sharemarket higher in relatively subdued trading yesterday after a rollercoast ride this week. The ail-ordinaries index was 17.9 points up near the close at 1673.8, barely off its high for the day at 1674.1.

It has lost 68.1 points since its close last Friday at 1741.9, before the 191point plunge on Wall Street which sent world bourses tumbling and evoked memories of the share market crash of October 19, 1987. “You cannot write off last Friday as a one-day wonder ... the market is still digesting that,” a dealer said.

Wall Street’s 40 point climb to 2683 on expectations of an easing in United States interest rates boosted the local

market sharply higher at the start of trading.

But a statement on radio by Federal Treasurer, Mr Keating, indicating he could not guarantee that domestic interest rates would not go higher, prompted some late morning selling, brokers said. However, the market lifted again in afternoon trading. National turnover was 101.92 million shares, worth sAustlB7.99M, with advances outnumbering declines by nearly three to one. The all-industrials index jumped 31.7 to 2673.5, the all-resources 7.6 to 916.6, and the gold marker 17.6 to 1541.4. Market leader, BHP, was a strong performer, gaining 14c to 956, as was Pacific Dunlop, up 6c to 491, and CSR, which rose
