Shirra maintains innocence

PA London New Zealand’s leading speedway rider, Mitch Shirra, yesterday maintained his innocence of taking drugs despite being found guilty of the charges by the sport’s governing body, the Federation of International Motorcyclists. The 30-year-old Aucklander in a statement released by his agents said that he was baffled about how traces of cannabis was found in urine samples taken after two international meetings in Britain last year. Shirra was cleared to carry on racing after an appeals tribunal last week reduced a two year ban with 12 months

suspension to 12 months probation on condition that he undergoes two drugs tests at the F.l.M.’s discretion, both of which will have to prove negative. The Kiwi has refused to comment publicly on the allegations. But Kea Management in a statement said: “Mitch Shirra has from the very first time that the accusations were made against him ... maintained that he was innocent of the charges made.

“Although a substance was found in the samples tested, he has always categorically stated that he had no knowledge how it got there.”
