Khan fined for absence
NZPA-Reuter Singapore Pakistan's Jansher Khan has been fined SUS3I7 ($530) and put on a year’s probation by the International Squash Players’ Association (1.5.P.A.) after he failed to turn up for the World Open prize-giving in Kuala Lumpur. The I.S.P.A. spokesman, Roger Eady, said the world number two, Jansher, had been fined for snubbing the sponsors and host nation Malaysia following his World
Open win 10 days ago. Eady said as well as the fine Jansher had been put on probation for 12 months. “Any misdemeanours in this 12-month period could attract a maximum fine of SUS7B92 ($13,000) and suspension from the I.S.P.A. circuit for up to three years,” he said.
Jansher’s winner’s cheque of SUSIS,OOO ($25,000) was withheld for several days and an official complaint was
lodged with the I.S.P.A. after the Pakistani failed to turn up for the closing dinner and prize-giving. In his defence, Jansher said he had not been officially invited to the ceremony.
“It would only have been courtesy to the sponsor, Singer, for him to have turned up,” the World Open executive director, Prasad Pillai, said. “Players had an obligation to the tournament.”
