Peters speech

Mr Winston Peters has widespread support in the National Party organisation and among National M.P.S for his comments yesterday on his party’s leadership failures. This does not translate into support for a leadership Challenge by Mr Peters, but it may come to that if the situation does not improve. In the meantime, he is echoing thoughts expressed by his colleagues in Parliament and widely
canvassed among delegates to National’s annual conference in Dunedin two months ago.
The leadership failure is not attributed just to the Leader of the National Party, Mr Jim Bolger. Most want to see Mr Bolger exercise greater leadership and lead them into next year’s General Election.
More criticism at the moment is being reserved for Mr Bolger’s two closest associates and allies, Mr Don McKinnon and Mr Bill Birch.
