Quake expected, Californians say

By

KAY FORRESTER

Two Californian residents who are holidaying in Christchurch say yesterday’s earthquake was expected by many. , Ms Eileen Randol said the “big” earthquake had been predicted “for years.” “We get minor ones all the time,” said Mr Bill Wolfe. The pair both live in Napa Valley, a wine area 80km north of San Francisco which was jolted by yesterday’s earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Mr Wolfe, and his wife Dorothy, and Ms Randol are in Christchurch this week as part of a sightseeing tour of New Zealand.

The visit follows one to Australian cities, including Launceston, which hosted the sister city committee of which Mr Wolfe is a member. The Napa Valley group left home at the end of last month and those who came to New Zealand will return early next month. Mr Wolfe and Ms Randol visited “The Press” yesterday for the latest news of the earthquake. Ms Randol has relatives living in San Francisco. They said they had never worried about living in an earth-quake-prone area. “We have quakes all the time, but this one is bigger,” Mr Wolfe said.
