Mill River could bounce back to form at Ellerslie

Auckland correspondent The capable Avondale mare, Mill River, looks set to bounce back to form in the D.B. Draught 2000 at Ellerslie today. The sister to the top stayer, Te Akau Prince, has had just one start this campaign and that was in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Pukekohe on September 30. Although eleventh, she was not far away in the 1400 m event. Stepping straight up to 2000 m today is cause for some concern, but she has done a lot of groundwork and last season she proved herself over distance. Owner-trainer Warren

Adams kept her to races up to 1600 m for most of the last term, but he tried her as a stayer in her last three outings and the result was two wins and a sound seventh (in Plume d’Or Veille’s Oliver Nicholson Handicap, 2400 m, at Ellerslie in May).

Mill River's two middledistance wins were at Ruakaka, over 2050 m, and Avondale, over 2000 m. Mill River has proved a consistent performer — gaining five wins and eight placings from 17 starts — and for a five-year-old she has been patiently handled by Adams.

Taupey Girl is a promising stayer which should

be ready for a bold showing.

Last season she won three times over ground and was a bold sixth in Regal Empress’ New Zealand Oaks at Trentham. Ankorette looked a handy stayer earlier in her career and now in the care of Brian Smith she seems on the way back to that form. She did not have much luck at Matamata recently. Gaines followed a stylish Pukekohe 1600 m win with a bold victory over ground at Avondale and deserves plenty of respect, while other chances are Guard Captain, Cast The Gauntlet, Purple Rose and Royal Banquet.
