Cricket test ends in tie

The first women’s indoor cricket test between New Zealand and Australia at, the Sockburn centre last evening ended sensationally in a tie. The batting heroines for New Zealand were two Christchurch players, Maia Lewis and Jenny Turner. Scorning their team’s perilous position, they scored a staggering 50 for the final partnership to level the scores. It was the biggest stand of the test, and the equalising run came off the last ball.

Earlier Australia made 96 with a solid team effort. The innings gained momentum with each successive partnership. The third batting pair, Glenda Hall and Heather Drew, showed sound technique in getting 27, and then came a well controlled 31 by Belinda Clarke and Monica Brogan. In the field for New Zealand the wicket-keeper, Sarah Illingworth, and Lewis brought off some smart dismissals. . The New Zealand innings be-

gan steadily with Katrina Withers and Antoinette Spain making 15. The second duo of Illingworth and Karen le Comber added a useful 23. Australia 96 (J. Lesiputty and M. Casey 14, J. Green and T. Cole 24, G. Hall and H. Drew 27, B. Clarke and M. Brogan 31; K. Withers -3, J. Turner —2, M. Lewis —1) drew with New Zealand 96 (K. Withers and A. Spain 15, K. le Comber and S. Illingworth 23, T. Rewita and L. Carroll 8, M. Lewis and J. Turner 50; Hall —ll, Cole —2).
