Golfer irks promoters
NZPA-AAP Brisbane Promoters of Melbourne’s $1 million Johnny Walker Golf Classic have baulked at paying Greg Norman appearance money which they claim would net the Shark more than the tournament’s $lBO,OOO first prize. The appearance money wrangle reached a head yesterday with Norman’s Australian-based agents — International Management Group (1.M.G.) declaring the classic organiser, David Inglis, had left his run too late to sign Norman and two other overseas stars. Mr Inglis has been chasing Norman,
American ace Curtis Strange and Britain’s Ryder Cup hero, Nick Faldo, to head the field for Australia’s richest 72 hole tournament this summer. But according to I.M.G. — which handles the affairs of the three golf giants — the trio will not tee up in Mr Inglis’ December 7-10 classic because of inadequate appearance money. Mr Inglis’ tournament partner, Greg Smith, yesterday said Norman had been offered $125,000 to play in the classic. “We offered Norman $125,000, but apparently that’s substantially short of what I.M.G. want,” Mr Smith said.
