Yorkshire cricket club picks Asians
NZPA-AAP London The Yorkshire County Cricket Club has moved to counter claims it is racist by giving four Asians the chance to work their way up to the first XL The four teenagers are all Yorkshire-born, as required by the club’s 126-year-old rules, and will be given special coaching this winter at the club’s Headingley headquarters at Leeds, the “Sunday Times” reported. Those who show promise will be awarded twoyear contracts and be trained for a place in the second XI. The four are Zaheer Rouf, aged 15, an allrounder from Bradford; Touqeer Ashraf, aged 18, a pace bowler from Wakefield; Kishor Lal, aged 17, a right-hand batsman from Bradford, and Shaukat Ali, aged 19, a right-hand batsman and leg spinner from Doncaster.
“I have always wanted to play for Yorkshire,” Ashraf said.
“There has been prejudice before. This is a breakthrough, a move in the right direction.” The club’s public relations committee chairman, Sydney Fielden, said the; selection of the four Asians was a new development.
“It’s a start and I am highly encouraged by it,” he said.
