Boxing Frenchman throws in towel
NZPA-AFP Moscow A French light-heavy-weight, Carlos Guerreiro, found Australia's Meldon Orr too much for him at the world amateur boxing championships and called it a day in the first round — clutching his throat and saying he could not continue. With the prospect of the Cuban light-heavyweight
champion, Pablo Romero, in the next round the Frenchman probably got the better deal. Orr is unlikely to fair any better than Sweden’s John. Pehersson, who was destroyed by the Cuban in spectacular fashion on Saturday. Orr’s win was Australia’s second of the day. Easier, a bantamweight, Eddwounan, moved into the
quarter-finals with a genuine chance of collecting a medal. The 19 year old from Sydney needed less than a minute to brush aside Hussain Al Motery, of Kuwait. Younan will meet Italy’s Luigi Quitadamo, who earlier had a comfortable points win over Mohnzhargai, of Mongolia. A An Australian lighttight,
Darrell Hiles, found himself facing East Germany’s Olympic champion, Andreas Zuelow, and any hopes of an upset quickly evaporated as the 20-year-old Hiles had to take a barrage of punches every time he tried to get inside the East German’s superior reach. Although he managed to survive three rounds, Hiles went down 4-24.
