Hospital economies
Sir,—l. C. Reid and Margaret Buckley (September 16) criticise members of . the Area Health Board for the decision to close Jubilee and Coronation-Hospitals. They can rest assured that no board member willingly makes a decision which will disrupt the life of any patient The need to close these hospitals has been apparent for some time. They are'jjjd, have a limited life and
are costly to maintain. Current Government funding cuts have precipitated early closing. This is an emotive issue which has been deliberately misrepresented. Whenever patients are moved it is disruptive, but care will be taken to make individual placements, which will be carefully and sensitively carried out after consultation with relatives. Where possible, moves will be made in groups, and with the same carers. The board’s other institutions have a number of beds available and Burwood, especially, has suitable facilities and a future Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit, for which the Government has recently promised funding.—Yours, etc.,
HONOR M. BONISCH, September 18, 1989.
