Racers pour diesel on Chch roads
By
NEIL CLARKSON
Drag-racing enthusiasts drew criticism from the Ministry of Transport last evening for pouring diesel on Christchurch .roads during the week-end. Council staff were called out last evening to pour sand on diesel at the junction of Port Hills Road and Chapmans Road. Senior Traffic Sergeant Russell Dellow said week-end car-racing was also reported along Cass Street and in the New Brighton car-park, opposite the New Brighton Work-
ing Men's Club. “There was racing in Cass Street on and off right through Saturday night,” he said. “They were pouring diesel on the road and racing up and down.” Racing was reported in the New Brighton car-park mi<l-afternoon yesterday. Drag racing at the Port Hills Road and Chapmans Road junction was reported about 8 p.m. Sergeant Dellow said pouring diesel on the road was irresponsible and dangerous. “It is causing a road hazard. One of these
days they are going to be responsible for someone really hurting themselves, r “Most members of the public know not to go down Cass Street, but they won’t be expecting to find diesel at the corner of Chapmans Road and Port Hills Road.” Those responsible for the drag racing were a nuisance, he said. “These guys are a major waste of time. We have got better things to do than chase them up.”
