Drop in apprentice contracts
Wellington reporter
New apprenticeships dropped 12.7 per cent in the last financial year. Briefing papers provided by the Labour Department to the new Minister of Labour, Mrs King, were released by the Opposition Employment spokesman, Mr Winston Peters.
The papers, gained under the Official Information Act, told Mrs King that the 22,926 apprenticeship contracts in force at March 31 were the lowest since 1970.
Reform of the apprenticeship system is under way with employers, unions and the Government involved. Mr Peters said the papers highlighted significant inter-departmental rivalry over post-school training in New Zealand.
