Canterbury injury toll grows

Canterbury has; gone through its | national championship programme remarkably free of injury, but the toll has started to grow just as the rugby schedule is about to be completed. \ Rob Penney was the first player to leave the field prematurely against Wellington on September 16, and the Canterbury captain, Albert Anderson, and the openside flanked Phil Cropper, both retired in

the final quarter of Saturday’s match against Hawke’s Bay at Lancaster Park. Anderson’s departure — a rare sight indeed — was brought about by a stud penetrating boot, sock and flesh, and Cropper was replaced in the seventieth minute with blood covering a good portion of his face. Earlier in the match, Cropper received a punch to the face which flattened him for some seconds. The blow went

undetected and Cropper courageously battled on for some time before he sought medical attention for what the Canterbury coach, Frank Jack, called “facial abrasions.” Penney was still limping from bis ankle injury sustained a week earlier and several of the Canterbury players will be under fitness tests before the team to play Otago in the final match is confirmed.
