Discovering Japan

JOHN COSGROVE, a photographer for “The Press,” records scenes from his recent visit to Japan where he photographed “Discover Kurashiki” as a follow-up to his 1988 exhibition, “One Day in Christchurch.” The two are sister cities. Japan consists of four main islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, plus about 3900 smaller adjacent islands. It is the seventh most populous nation in the world, with a density of about 325 people per square kilometre. Total population is 122,780,000. Japan’s constitution is based on principles of sovereignty, pacifism, and basic human rights. Its present ruler is Emperor Akihito, who succeeded to the throne on the death of his father in January. Emperor Hirohito, aged 87, the world’s longest reigning monarch, had ruled the country for 62 years.
