Judge abandons trial

The failure of two witnesses to appear resulted in a High Court trial being abandoned in Christchurch yesterday. Terry Ivan Ormandy, aged 40, a solo father, was discharged by Mr Justice Tipping. Ormandy, represented by Mr Mervyn Glue, was

alleged to have tried to defeat the course of justice on May 17 by approaching two persons to give false evidence relating to a charge that he had cannabis for supply. The two persons, Lee Colin Norman Mak and Sybil Jane Damon-Bill-ings, failed to appear for

the Crown yesterday. Miss Catherine Cull, for the Crown, indicated before a jury was empanelled that she was not able to offer evidence on the charge. Mr Justice Tipping said he considered a discharge appropriate in the circumstances.
