Joy’s Girl could make winning return

Joy’s Girl, a 1:59.3 three-year-old filly miler of last season, looks well placed to begin her four-year-old campaign on a winning note in the C 3 and 4 Hideaway Restaurant Mobile Pace at the Timaru Harness Club’s meeting tomorrow.

The Smooth Fella mare made Montini Royal work to get past her during his Addington trial win last week and her performance takes on greater credence following Montini Royal’s good fourth, prompted to third, in top-four-year-old company at the New Brighton meeting last week.

The Jack Smolenskitrained Joy’s Girl has drawn handily in the first leg of the Timaru Club’s T.A.B. double and should be in the firing line throughout.

Clever Maddie was an all-the-way winner first up from Bob Beck’s Ashburton stable at Addington last week in C2 company and should not have her progress impeded by the rise in class here. The Clever Innocence mare, one of six Beck has in work at the new bam he has leased from the Ashburton Trotting Club, sprinted in over her last 800 m in 58.5 seconds last week and from her frontline draw again here could try for another end-to-end success.

Swift Fella has been slightly disappointing in three appearances so far this term, but the royallybred four-year-old ran the race of an improver at Addington last week and is worth including. The Smooth Fella-Roy-don Kiwi Byrd gelding looked smart when completing a hat-trick of wins in the autumn from the Fred Fletcher-Mark Smolensk! stable.

Bay Loch, a free-legged daughter of Locarno, almost caused a boilover at Addington last week after doing her share of work in the running and a repeat would see her going close tomorrow. However, she has an awkward draw to contend with. .
