City development
Sir, — Regarding the fate of the United Service Hotel, can I suggest that if every building of an earlier age and style is removed from the centre of a city we might as well have had a bomb or two. Such is the case in parts of British cities such as Bristol and Exeter where, sadly, the results of war clearance replace traditional styles with nondescript modernity. It •is ironic that New Zealanders surge overseas to admire what is left of historic architecture, while in our own younger country we are in danger of obliterating our heritage with buildings of boring, commonplace convenience. — Yours, etc., . p. buchanan: September 3,1989.
