Being fit when you are over fifty
A fitness programme for those aged 50 and more is starting at the Young Men’s Christian Association next week.' There will be two 50minute classes — one at the Y.M.C.A. in Hereford Street on Monday and the other at the Greers Road Y.M.C.A. on Friday. Both classes start at 9 a.m. The programme will include a fitness assessment, which will be repeated periodically to monitor progress. The exercises will be relaxed and to music, and will include movements to increase cardio-vascular fitness, stamina and flexibility. Those who have been sedentary for many years
and want to break into exercise very gradually, as well as those who already exercise regularly, are welcome. Sara Davies, who ran highly successful classes for senior citizens at Cowles Stadium, will be the instructor. Manic depressives Anger management is the topic of the Manic Depressive Society’s open meeting tomorrow evening, September 12. The society holds twomonthly meetings which are a chance to meet others who have experienced manic depressive illness and their families and friends. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Upper Riccarton Methodist Church on the corner of Brake Street and Yaldhurst Road. Admission is 50c. English course Languages are all about people, says language tutor Des Walker. “People speak them — and influences on language are mainly human,” he says. Des will start a new course in English since the Renaissance at the Workers Educational Association, 59 Gloucester Street, .this Thursday, September 14. This will look at present and future developments, Esperanto, grammar and punctuation changes, and Pidgin English. The afternoon course runs for ten weeks. Phone Des at 326-379 for more details.

Forest and Bird New Directions for Forest and Bird is the title of a talk by Kevin Smith, the conservation director of
the Royal Forest And Bird Protection Society at a meeting this Wednesday, September 13. This will be in the Stringleman Room of. the Canterbury Public Library at 8 p.m. All welcome.
