Sex tax against drugs?
NZPA-AFP Bogota The Colombian Congress will be asked to take up a proposal to finance ■ Colombia’s war on crime by levying a tax on Bogota’s “houses of love,” it was reported at the week-end. A former Bogota Mayor, Julio Cesar Sanchez, told a Chamber of Commerce meeting that Congress would soon
receive a proposal to impose a 10 per cent tax on Bogota’s “motels” and “residencias,” which rent rooms by the hour for amorous encounters, the daily “La Prensa” reported. The measure was proposed last year, but lawmakers failed to establish criteria for determining which establishments qualified as love nests.
Mr Sanchez said the latest proposal was to impose a 10 per cent tax on the “room-by-the-hour” motels. The measure was to be considered by Congress, which must approve new taxes for the nation’s capital. The proceeds would go to the Security and Vigilance Fund, a Bogota municipal office, he said.
