Grants committee abolished

Wellington reporter The University Grants Committee will be wound up on June 30, 1990, and its main functions taken over by the new Ministry of Education. Its assets of about $26 million, mainly buildings in Wellington, will be returned to the Consolidated Account. The Minister of Education, Mr Goff, said the Ministry would pick up the role of maintaining a broad overview of university development and of advising the Government on the needs of univer-

isty education and research. A number of U.G.C. activities would pass to the Vice-Chancellors’ Committee, which would become recognised as a statutory body. It would liaise and oversee the admission of overseas students to New Zealand, he said. The ongoing work of the U.G.C. curriculum committee and the Universities’ Entrance Board would pass to the new National Education Qualifications Authority.
