Sharpe keyed up
Ray Sharpe celebrated his twenty-first birthday in style by reining his first Addington winner at the New Brighton Harness Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. Sharpe, who turned 21 on Friday, had a strong band of West Coast relatives in attendance for Friday’s party and also to watch the “birthday boy” in action on Saturday, and they did not go home disappointed. Lone Eagle, a six-year-old brother to the former open class race mare, Jilaire’s Chance, was making his debut from the Amberley stable of Sharpe’s father, Roger, in the Garry and Jan Thompson Pace and the Majestic Chance entire showed a fine sense of occasion, responding best from a handy spot to score by half a length. Formerly trained' at Templeton by Derek Jones, Lone Eagle was transferred to Sharpe’s stable to take advantage of some beach training and was the medium of solid support on Saturday. Sharpe, jun., initially worked for his father before spending time with lan Shinn and latterly Derek Jones. He ended a 17-month stint with Jones two weeks ago and has returned to work full-time for his father. — Jeff Scott
