Easy for Canty B
Special correspondent Dunedin The soft-shoe shuffle of Canterbury B second five-eighths, Kose Seinafo, was one of many highlights during Canterbury B’s 64-14 drubbing of Otago B at Bathgate Park on Saturday. Still on a high after lowering Auckland B’s colours a week earlier (the first time the Auckland side had been beaten in 37 games), Canterbury B had no difficulty in extending its unbeaten record this season, and despite the presence of a screeching nor’easterly, ran in a dozen tries against the hapless Otago team. Building first upon a powerful and urgent forward display, Canterbury gradually expanded its repertoire, introducing, through clever combinations and slick handling, some of its most potent weapons to the Otago players. And one of the longest memories to remain with those
players, will be the midfield combination of Canterbury s electric second five-eighth, Kose Seinafo,, and the big strong-running centre, Steve Hansen. After opting to play with the gale in the first half, Canterbury wasted no time in converting the advantage to points, when the prop, Tony Ahern, went over for the first of his two tries after a prolonged assault on the Otago line. Thereafter Canterbury was as regular as clockwork, with the No. 8, Anthony Dalzell (2), first five-eighths, Colin Williamson, and blindside flanker, Steven Dods, all scoring at five minute intervals, and when Ahem, showing remarkable mobility around the park got a hand to the ball to complete his brace, Canterbury was able to savour a 32-nil lead as it went, to the break. There were brief Otago highlights during the first half.
Ken Woodhouse was totally committed in his search for the loose ball and made some strong runs when the opportunities were there, but he was needed so desperately in the tight that these were few and -far between. Otago again had its moments during the second half. The second five-eighths, Graham Dempster, grabbed two tries, the first after Ben Quaqua and Mike Kenworthy had combined and made ground inside Canterbury’s twenty-two, and the second after Quaqua had nudged through a little grubber kick, which Dempster made his own. Final Score: Canterbury B 64 (A. Dalzell 2, K. Seinafo 2, T. Ahern 2, S. Dods, R. Flannery, R. McDonald, C. Williamson, R. Connell, S. Harding tries. Williamson 8 conversions) Otago 14 (G. Dempster 2, M. Lawrence tries. M. Kenworthy conversion).
