Volleyball team off to Seoul
The New Zealand men’s volleyball team will head for Seoul today seeking a good performance at the Asian Games competition. It has been grouped with Bangladesh, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Japan in its qualifying, group and appears to have a good chance of finishing second. Japan is a hot favourite in the group but the other sides appear to be within reach of New Zealand which is aiming
to contest the play-offs from fifth to eighth. Four Christchurch players are in the 12-man team — Reid Hamilton, Glen Hamilton, Mark Termeer and Hugh McCutcheon. The quartet all play for the national club champion, Pioneer, and should have been joined by their team mate, Tony Natapu, who was controversially omitted because his cheque to cover expenses arrived too late to
satisfy the coach, John Hall, of Wellington. The team will train for a week in Seoul before the competition starts. The. team is:—McCutcheon, Termeer, R. Hamilton, G. Hamilton (Pioneer); Alan Pierce, Tom Miller, Brian Doughty, Warren Smith, David Becroft (Sparta, Auckland); Sean Carey (Scorpions, Dunedin); Owen Ranfurly (Porirua); Simon Kwan (Northcote).
