Gower and Botham out of tour squads

NZPA-Reuter London The deposed England cricket captain, David Gower, and all-rounder, lan Botham, were overlooked for their country’s winter tour programme in a surprise move by the selectors, who included four uncapped players in the squads. Gower, sacked as captain in favour of Graham Gooch 24 hours earlier, and Botham could not find a place in either the party of 14 for the Nehru Cup one-day tournament in India next month nor among the 16

players for the test tour of West Indies starting next January.

Apart from naming the uncapped quartet of Ricardo Ellcock, Nasser Hussain, Keith Medleycott and Alec Stewart for the West Indies tour, the selectors recalled the opener, Wayne Larkins, after an eight-year absence from the international arena.

The squads are:— West Indies (16).— Graham Gooch (captain), Alan Lamb (vice-captain), Robert Bailey, David Capel, Phillip deFreitas, Ricardo Ellcock, Angus Fraser, Eddie Hemmings, Nasser Hussain, Wayne Larkins, Devon Malcolm, Keith Medleycott, Jack Russell, Gladtsone Small, Robin Smith, Alec Stewart India (14).— Gooch (capt), Lamb (vice-capt), Capel, Nick Cook, deFreitas, Fraser, Hemmings, Hussain, Larkins, Derek Pringle, Russell, Small, Smith, Stewart
