Gower and Botham out of tour squads
NZPA-Reuter London The deposed England cricket captain, David Gower, and all-rounder, lan Botham, were overlooked for their country’s winter tour programme in a surprise move by the selectors, who included four uncapped players in the squads. Gower, sacked as captain in favour of Graham Gooch 24 hours earlier, and Botham could not find a place in either the party of 14 for the Nehru Cup one-day tournament in India next month nor among the 16
players for the test tour of West Indies starting next January.
Apart from naming the uncapped quartet of Ricardo Ellcock, Nasser Hussain, Keith Medleycott and Alec Stewart for the West Indies tour, the selectors recalled the opener, Wayne Larkins, after an eight-year absence from the international arena.
The rest of the Caribbean squad, in which Alan Lamb is Gooch’s vice-captain, comprises essentially players who appeared . in this summer’s Ashes series.
