Horse of Year

PA Wellington Poetic Prince was honoured as the New Zealand Horse of the Year at a function in Hastings last night.

The now retired entire, formerly trained in New Plymouth by John Wheeler, was clearly preferred in a poll of New Zealand racing writers over Empire Rose (Mack-

innon Stakes, Melbourne Cup), Regal City (Easter Handicap) and Horlicks (DB Draught Classic).

Last season, Poetic Prince became the first horse to win the weight-for-age Cox Plate-Tancred Stakes double and, in doing so, became the greatest stakes-earner in New Zealand and Australian racing history.
