NZPA Sydney The well-performed Woodville galloper, The Phantom, resumes racing in the sAust3ol,ooo Craiglee Stakes (1600 m at Flemington today, his connections’ memories haunted by an illfated visit to Melbourne last spring. A back strain forced the Noble Bijou— The Fantasy gelding to withdraw from the Victoria Derby field last October and return home to be spelled without a start in Australia. But he crossed the Tasman again in the autumn and finished second in the South Australian Derby to Sea Brigand (which died earlier this week after an operation on an injured eye). The Phantom has not raced since then and his trainer, Murray Baker, having endured much bad luck with injured horses on Australian campaigns, seemed cautious when asked about The Phantom’s chances first up in the Craiglee Stakes. ‘‘He’s had a couple of good trials in New Zealand before coming over and I’m hoping he can give a good account of himself,” Baker said. The field for the Group Two race includes some top names, including Matamata-trained My Steely Dan, whose connections will be looking for a big improvement on his unplaced efforts in the Liston Stakes (1400 m and Memsie Stakes (1400 m The imported stayer, Almaarad, will make his Australian debut in the Craiglee Stakes, having impressed with recent work at the South Australian stable of Colin Hayes.
