Fisher ruckus
NZPA-AAP Brisbane Email has criticised Australian state and federal governments for allowing a New Zealand competitor, whitegoods manufacturer, Fisher and Paykel, into the country. Email’s chief executive, Mr Don McNeill, said Australia was shooting itself in the foot by encouraging the New Zealand manufacturer to open a refrigerator plant in Brisbane and giving Fisher duty-free
access to the Australian market. Fisher’s control over the New Zealand market prevented any Australian company doing the same thing in New Zealand, and the governments should insist on getting export trade in return for market access, he said. , Fisher has been given cheap land and other incentives by the Queensland Government to open a plant in Brisbane. It is scheduled to start production in mid-1990.
