The old Government Buildings in Cathedral Square could be a suitable site for a youth hostel, say two visiting International Youth Hostel Association representatives. .The association’s president, Mr John Parfitt, secretary-
general, Mr Rawdon Lau, were in Christchurch yesterday on part of a national tour of youth hostel facilities. Mr Parfitt said it was common practice in Europe for Governments and local bodies to make historic buildings available as hostels. ■ - • ’’ That buildings worthy of
preservation could be retained and the local youth hostel association got the use of the building. The general manager of the New Zealand Y.H.A., Mr Len West, said the old Government Buildings would be a suitable site for a hostel. It was cantrally located,
and likely to be easily converted. Mr Parfitt said donating buildings: was one way in which local and central government could help the local Y.H.A. The New Zealand association, unlike those in the United States and Europe, received little assistance from the Govem|)'ent.
