Manufacturers welcome decision
Support for the Anzac frigates project has come from the Manufacturers’ Federation. Its director-general, Mr Wally Gardner, said at least $750 million of work would come to New Zealand. “The work will provide a useful fillip to lift our industry’s technological capabilities’ that will have spin-off benefits over many other
activities,” he said. The secretary of the Engineers’ Union, Mr Rex Jones, said the decision was a victory for common sense. He said New Zealand companies should now gear up for the work opportunities provided. In Parliament, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, said it was significant that the Deputy Prime Minister, Ms Clark, was absent for
yesterday’s decision. He said she was opposed to the purchase. Mr Bolger said frigates could not fulfil a defence role for New Zealand without the help of allies such as the United States and Britain. Australia had backed New Zealand into a corner, he said. It had told the Government to buy Anzac ships or face serious economic implications.
