Day of protest by bus drivers

By PAM MORTON Christchurch bus drivers wore black armbands to symbolise mourning in a day of protest yesterday against the proposed deregulation of. the industry. The drivers believe deregulation will be the death of the public bus service. The protest was organised by the Christchurch branch of the Tramway

Workers’ Union with the support of unions covering Christchurch Transport Board staff. The union’s branch president, Mr Maurice Ward, said the public’s response had been very good. “We had some passengers give us their names and ask to help in our campaign against deregulation.”

In a pamphlet handed out to passengers the union warned that the recent cuts to bus services and reduced running times were a “taste” of deregulation. The union is also concerned that deregulation will bring reduced wages and conditions for those in the industry. The protest day will be followed up with a peti-

tion to the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries, calling for deregulation to be dropped. Mr Ward said the union did not have any grand delusions that it would beat the Government, “but we do think we have a very good case and a lot of support.” Deregulation is likely to be introduced in early 1991.
