Billiards upset
PA Wellington Hawke’s Bay’s Paul Stocker, the rising star of New Zealand billiards, upset predictions yesterday by reaching the semi-finals of the national billiards championship last night. Stocker, Hawke’s Bay champion five times, faced a tough match in the last 16 when he met five-times runner-up, Russell Robinson (Wellington), but responded to the challenge in magnificent style by containing the New Zealand No. 2 to win, 970-891. Results: Last-16 round: K. Giles (Canterbury) beat P. Edwards (Manawatu) 1333-897; D. Boyce (Waikato) beat D. Gibb (Wellington) 915-861; W. Harcourt (Wellington) beat J. Ifa (Waikato) 833-655; D. Kirkness (Canterbury) beat W. Carey (Auckland) 741-691; P. Stocker (Hawke’s Bay) beat R. Robinson (Wellington) 970-891; M. Stewart (Counties) beat P. De Groot (Canterbury) 885-824; B. Bennett (Taranaki) beat C. Anderson (Waikato) 935-794; D. Meredith (Canterbury) beat R. Millicich (Auckland) 1448-610.
