Liz Douglas wins golf title
PA Auckland Liz Douglas, from Christchurch, yesterday clinched the Auckland women’s provincial golf championships, beating her Tasman Cup teammate, Jan Higgins, 4 and 3, in the final. Douglas said later she had not played in such miserably wet conditions since moving from Southland four years ago. “I had forgotten what it
was like, but for some strange reason I seemed to play my best golf in the wind and rain.” In the morning, Douglas finished one up over Sheree Higgens, (Hamilton), who will also play in the Tasman Cup event in Perth next week. Both sank long birdie putts at the eighteenth. Two hours earlier, Jan Higgins had defeated. Lynette Brooky (Para-
paraumu), 4 and 3. It was obvious the delay had caused Higgins to lose her rhythm, for she lost the first two holes, and found herself three down after the fifth. However, a fine third shot at the sixth landed within a metre of the pin. That birdie putt gave her the only hole of the match. The pair halved the next six holes, but Doug-
las birdied the twelfth and thirteenth. Higgins left her putt short at the fifteenth and she acknowledged the match was over. Douglas, Jan Higgins, Sheree Higgens and Tracey Hanson — who was knocked-out of the championships in the second round — leave for Perth at the week-end for the annual clash with Australia.
