Two additions to ranks

By

DAVID McCarthy

Godavari and Faith Guest are the two latest additions to a lengthy line-up of thoroughbred stallions in the Canterbury district this spring. Both horses will stand at Mrs Gladys Clement’s Blue Falcon Lodge, Willowby, each at a fee of $5OO. For Godavari, the new location is something of a homecoming. He began his stud career in Canterbury, siring his best son, Little Brown Jug, in his first season. Godavari sired eight foals in his first season and five were stakes horses, other smart performers being Indigod, Lord Of The Dance and Glydavari, winner of the Show Gate Stakes. Godavari, which has left 55 winners from 117 starters, stood for some seasons in ' . Australia, where he left the top galloper, Godarchi. He has stood more recently at Waikanau Stud, near Wellington. Godavari’s son, Little Brown Jug, is also standing in Canterbury this season. Faith Guest formerly stood at Middlepark Stud after one season in Australia in 1984. He won four races, all as a two-year-old, although stakesplaced at three in France. He had his first runners here last season and he left the winner, Believe In Me. Faith Guest has unusual bloodlines, being line-bred to Nearctic, the sire of Northern Dancer. His sire, Be My Guest, a top miler in England, was by Northern Dancer and Faith Guest’s dam, Faith Lift, herself line-bred to Hyperion, is by Nearctic. Faith Guest - will spend two seasons in the South Island. Mrs Clements and her late husband, Owen, stood a number of stallions over the years, including Flaconhurst, Postillion, Kenann and Alarm Call when the stud was based near Nelson, and more recently Turn The Tide and Solaboy.
