Empire Rose will be centre of attention

Wellington correspondent

Empire Rose is certain to be one of the major drawcards when the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club opens its spring meeting at Hastings tomorrow. Empire Rose, the darling of Melbourne turf after winning last year’s Melbourne Cup, will be having her first outing since failing on a wet track in the Wellington Cup last January. She contests the $40,000 Byerley Thoroughbred Stakes (1400 m a weight-for-age race. There is a chance that Empire Rose will strike a wet track tomorrow. It was raining in Hastings yesterday. “She’ll still run,” trainer Laurie Laxon said yesterday. “She has to have the race.” Empire Rose is one of four horses that Laxon is sending to Hastings and all will command respect. Courtalista is in the Scannell Hardy Graduation (1200 m a class three event; Blue Music will run in the Cavanagh Stakes (1200 m and Weston Fun is in the TAB Tracktalk Novice (1200 m Tony Allan will ride the team. Empire Rose, while having her first start this term, has already been to Hastings for an exhibition gallop. Her progress since that task just on a month ago has been spot on and after tomorrow’s outing, she will move on to Matamata for the Matamata Cup (1600 m on October 3. Courtalista is in both cups and early markets rate her highly in the Caulfield Cup. “It won’t be too difficult to place her,” Laxon said. “She is only a class three horse.” She has won three times, at Trentham, Te Aroha and then the Lindauer Stakes. In Australia she ran second in the A.J.C. Oaks, won by Research, the performance that has won her the respect of the Australian bookmakers. Tomorrow’s Byerley Stakes includes two other prospective Australian tourists, Regal City and Shuzohra. Regal City, one of the candidates for tonight’s Horse of the Year Award, disappointed trainer Jim Gibbs when only seventh in the Foxbridge Plate. Gibbs said that tests on the horse had found nothing amiss and he remains firmly on target for the Cox Plate.
