Claim of former Beatle disputed
NZPA-AP Nashville, Tennessee A group of Nashville studio musicians is disputing a claim by Ringo Starr that he and they were drunk when the former Beatle recorded an album in Memphis two years ago. Starr has sued to keep the album under wraps, saying he was suffering from alcoholism when it was recorded, and that the recordings are not up to his standards. A Georgia judge has blocked the record’s release pending a trial expected in early October.
“He seemed to be real sharp to me,” said Bobby Wood, a piano and keyboard player who recorded with Starr in the February and April, 1987, sessions. “I noticed that he wasn’t on key. But you know, Ringo’s never been on key. He’s just not that great a singer.” Starr said in his suit against CRS Records, of College Park, Georgia, and the Memphis producer, Chips Moman, that marijuana was sometimes smoked during the album’s recording and that he and the other musicians were sometimes intoxicated.
