Paul Kelly And The Messengers will play one show at The Playroom on Monday, October 2. “So Much Water So Close To Home,” the band’s new LP, will be showcased on the New Zealand tour. The Auckland speedytypes, S.P.U.D. (fill in initials yourself) will play at the Carlton Hotel within the next fortnight. And if anyone can substantiate the rumour that Dinosaur Jr are playing in Auckland later this year, please come forward and claim your reward. * * * It seems Prince’s involvement in the film “Batman” has promptedmore excursions into celluloid, with news of his plans for four movies'. One of them is the thus far untitled biography of the original Delta bluesman, Robert Johnson; one lives in hope that he doesn’t decide to take the starring role. The other films are “Graffiti Bridge,” "The Dawn” and “Dark On The Moon.” * * * Liza Minelli will have a new album out early next month entitled “Results,” more evidence of the Pet Shop Boys’ remarkable ability to' revive languishing legendary stars. The collaboration LP will feature a cover ver-
sion of the. Pet Shop Boys’ “Rent,” “Tonight Is Forever,” and Tanita Tikaram’s “Twist In My Sobriety.” * * * More from “They Live Again” ... The vacancy left in the Travelling Wilburys by Roy Orbison might be filled by Del “Runaway” Shannon. Shannon has been working on a new single with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, sparking rumours that the arrangement might turn out to be more permanent. * * * The Band Name Of The Week goes to Niggers With Attitude, a five-piece rap outfit whose tonnage in gold chain and candid lip easily measures up to that of Public Enemy and Eric B and Rakim. Their debut Island LP, “Outta Compton,” has sold more than a million copies in the United States. Tickets for Radio UFM’s “Disorientation” concert went on sale on Wednesday. The six hours of live music, featuring the lauded locals, The Bats, Bailter Space and the Breathing Cage, will be held in the Horticultural Hall next Friday evening. Tickets cost $l2 and can be bought from Galaxy Records or the
university’s Student Union. Ten single passes will be up for grabs for UFM listeners next week. * * * Hot on the heels of Neil Finn, the ageing dude, Dave Dobbyn, will make an African trek in October. Dobbyn will be trailing a camera crew as he peers into povertystricken parts of South Africa. A documentary has been commissioned by TVNZ. It is expected to cost about $llO,OOO. *. » » The Bats have had a frustrating time waiting for their new LP, "Law Of Things,” to return from an Australian record pressing plant. The band had planned a New Zealand and Australian tour in May to coincide with its release, but there is still no sign of the record, says the guitarist, Kaye Kean. “Law Of Things,” recorded at Wellington’s Writhe Studio last October, has languished in Australia, "Waiting in the queue,” she says. » * * Aretha Franklin wants to sing so music programmes can be restored in Detroit’s public schools. The queen of soul has offered to give a benefit concert to help raise the SUSI.2S million ($2.05 million) needed to restore instrumental music instruction.
