Capital stock boosts kill
Record or near record beef kills have been made in South Island meat works this season, at the expense of capital stock, according to a Meat Board production report. By the end of July, the total beef kill was up 11.74 per cent on the same period last year. Heifer slaughter was up
49,000 head, or 52 per cent, while cow slaughter had increased by 18,000 head. The report said that just over 28 million lambs were slaughtered by the end of July, with the season virtually finished. The kill was 3.48 per cent higher than last year and the average weight was
12.83 kg. The North Island lamb kill had increased 11.69 per cent on last year to 10.96 million but the South Island kill had dropped 0.49 per cent to 17.12 million. The national mutton slaughter had increased about 27 per cent on last year to 6.6 million.
