Ten-pin wins

A Christchurch girl, Leah Whatarangi, bowled consistently well to win the open grade girls' singles and the girls’, all events titles at the national junior ten-pin bowling championships in Petone last week-end.

Tina Counsell also performed well to win the girls’ A grade all events, and lost the girls’ masters event by a mere four pins. The Garden City teammates were third in the open grade doubles, and, with Angela Murray and Nicky Abbott, gained second place in the teams’ event.

The Christchurch boys also bowled well, with Martin Palmer producing some good scores when needed. He won the boys’ A grade masters, and also bowled the highest game of the tournament, a 233.

Palmer and Lyall Thomas were second in the A grade doubles, and the boys’ A grade team of Palmer, Thomas, Alan Hancox and Joedy Blacklock finished fourth. However, they might yet gain third place, as a protest against the winning team has to be resolved.
