A knitting book with a difference has been created by Roz Mexted, a designer who is best known for her colourful entries in the Benson and Hedges Awards over the years.

Her book, Designer Knits, contains 22 patterns for men’s and women’s sweaters, women’s jackets, coats and children’s knits. All are basic knit-r-row, purl-a-row patterns, with the myriad of colours marked on easy-to-read graphs.

The book also includes many knitting tips, from tension checking to finishing advice, showing how to make the inside of the jersey look almost as good as the outside.

The final chapter deals with how to make your own designs, from inspiration to graphing. Designer Knits forms a comprehensive guide book for the creative knitter, and also puts ihe stunning garments of one of New Zealand’s foremost knitwear designers within reach of the ordinary New Zealander.

Philippe Model has used the primitive beauty of Aboriginal art in his range of handbags and shoes for Elie Effe. Model, whose shoes, hats and gloves are used by major French houses like Lanvin and Jean-Paul Gaultier to complement their collections, has worked closely with the Australian manufaturer, Leonie Furber, on the Elie Effe label.

The designs come from a direct descendant of the Kamilori tribe, Wir-

ingah, who produced this art exclusively for Elie Effe. Her circular design, on which the collection is based, represents a water hole or camp site. The resulting “Capricornia” collection tips Nubuck (shaved leather which looks like velvet) and metallic leathers, along with sculptured heels, as the way to go this season. The most important statement is the thong, with classic courts, chiselled toes and updated strap sandals making appearances.
