Feisty Scottish junior pushes top German to five sets

PA Hamilton The fourth seed, West Germany, had some soulsearching to do after some close calls in its 3-0, win over Scotland yesterday in the teams’ competition at the world junior women’s squash championships.

The No. 1 and worldranked No. 19 senior, Sabine Schone, was taken to five sets by tiny Scot Helen Nicoll.

Schone was on top throughout but could not shake off the tenacious Scot, eventually prevailing 9-4, 4-9, 9-3, 4-9, 9-0. And the No. 3, Sabine Baum, had a lengthy foursetter against Emma Donaldson, the German fin-

ally winning 10-9, 1-9, 9-7, 9-7. The first two days of teams’ competition have not produced any startling results with the top four countries — England, Australia, New Zealand and West Germany — have yet to drop a game. England’s new junior women’s world champion, Donna Vardy, was back in action yesterday, easily accounting for Ireland’s Orla Doherty 9-2, 9-2, 9-1. Yesterday it was Australia’s turn to rest its top player, Robyn Cooper, and Carol Owens fitted easily into her place to beat the top American, Berkeley Belknap, 9-1, 96, 9-1.7

Led by last week’s individual world championship runner-up, Lynora Hati, New Zealand looked comfortable in downing Canada, 3-0. Hati beat the Canadian No. 1, Margo Green, 9-5, 9-0, 9-0, while the New Zealand No. 2, Nita Pearson, looked almost as comfortable beating Jordanna Fraiberg, 9-6, 9-2, 9-2.
