Busy schedule for Caygill on trip

The Minister of Finance, Mr Caygill, will leave today on his first big overseas trip since taking the portfolio, last December. The 3i/ 2 week trip will take him to Hong Kong, Japan, Britain and the United States, and to Jamaica for the Commonwealth Finance Ministers’ meeting. In the United States, he will attend the annual International Monetary Fund meetings.
In Japan, he will meet the former Minister of Finance, Mr Michio Watanabe, and the newly appointed Minister, Mr Ryutaro Hashimoto. He will meet the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Nigel Lawson, while in England. The trip includes a heavy public speaking agenda, with nine speeches scheduled, several to key international audiences. He will speak to the Hong
Kong-New Zealand Business Association this; Friday, and is also scheduled to give a keynote address in London to Euromoney’s Asia Pacific Conference on September 18. In New York, Jie will continue a long-standing tradition of addressing the Asia Society, and in Washington, D.C., he will deliver the Per Jacobsson Lecture, named after a proponent of international monetary co-operation. Mr Caygill will meet repre-
sentatives of the financial community in each country for briefings on the state of the New Zealand economy. He leaves at a time when interest rates are falling, inflation is low, and relative political calm is prevailing, giving him a strong story to tell to potential foreign investors. He will return to New Zealand on September 30, in time for the Labour Party conference.
