Frigates to break anti-N. law — Ross

The Anzac frigates, if bought, would have nuclear decontamination facilities, the New Zealand Nuclear Free Peacemaking Association believes. It has called on the Government to reconsider frigate design options to ensure that they comply with anti-nuclear legislation. The secretary of the association, Mr Larry Ross, said if the ships have “nuclear, biological and chemical capabilities” they would contravene the Nuclear-Free

Zone Act. He received an assurance in May from the then Prime Minister, Mr Lange, that they would not. The group’s concerns were sparked by frigate plans, dated last year, which showed cleansing facilities for nuclear contamination. Mr Lange had told Mr Ross that the Government had rejected the New Zealand Navy’s recommendation that the facilities be included. Mr Ross said he had seen no proof of the Government’s rejection.
