Belfast soldiers shoot suspect
NZPA-AP Belfast Soldiers shot and killed a suspect yesterday moments after gunmen on a motor-cycle killed a man in a Catholic neighbourhood, authorities said. Later, in a message to a radio station in the British province, the Ulster Volunteer Force (U.V.F.) said its men killed Patrick McKenna. The group said McKenna was a member of the Irish Republican Army — a claim strenuously denied by relatives. The U.V.F., an outlawed loyalist guerrilla group, also identified the dead gunman as one of its members, Brian Robinson. The police confirmed the identity of the dead
men. A second suspect surrendered and was in hospital with undisclosed injuries, the Royal Ulster Constabulary (R.U.C.) said. Two handguns were recovered. The police said two men on a motor-cycle had gone into the Ardoyne area of Belfast. Witnesses said one man got off the motor-cycle, shoved shoppers and children aside and shot a man. The victim ran a grocery shop, according to Sinn Fein, the legal political wing of the Irish Republican Army. The gunmen encountered an Army patrol as they were making their getaway, the R.U.C. said.
