Cameras to catch red-light runners

Christchurch motorists running red lights will soon come under the watchful eye of a special camera designed to take photographs of traffic offenders. The $50,000 red-light traffic camera system takes colour slides of red light runners to be used as evidence in issuing traffic offences. The Christchurch City Council’s traffic engineer, Mr Mike Gadd, said the camera should be set up at a city intersection in about 10 days. The intersection will be well sign-posted as having a camera system, Mr Gadd said. “We are not attempting to hide the fact. We hope that people will drive better because they know it is there.” Christchurch is reputed to have one of the highest collision rates at traffic intersections. The Ministry of Transport is at present studying accidents at traffic signals in Christchurch. The City Council had met the cost of the camera but an application has been made to the Ministry of Transport to have the costs defrayed, Mr Gadd said.
