Members display nicknames

If the New Zealand netball team’s nicknames were not already known, there can be no doubt that the more notorious have been found out. Bendon, the major sponsor for New Zealand netball, presented the victorious World Games champions with personalised towelling bath robes at the end of the New Zealand netball tournament in Hamilton on Saturday. Each member’s nickname was printed on the back in bold black print and the recipients were forced to model the garments for the enthusiastic crowd.

Twirl (Tracy Eyrl) and Beans (Robin Dillimore) were the oddest, while the Canterbury names Apes (April leremia), Heff (Annette Heffernan) and Budge (Sharon Burridge) were selfexplanatory. Lyn Parker, the New Zealand coach, was understandably nervous about what the team had in store for her because they had poetic licence. But she was let off lightly with “Lyn” — obviously the team knew who was in charge of the team training sessions. Other names were.— Wai (Wai Taumaunii), J.T. (Julie Townsend), Sange (Sandra Mallett), Ritz (Rita Fatialofa), Ana (Ana Noovao), Carter (Julie Carter), and Louisa (Louisa Wall).
