Keeping warm

Sir,—Jack Ede (August 28) argues for wearing hats in cold weather and bases this on his own experience and advice from outdoor sports organisations. He would probably extend that advice to using hats as a protection from the sun’s ultra-violet rays. Skin specialists advise protecting the head, ears and face against possible skin damage from the sun. The process of rendering chlorofluorocarbons harmless to the ozone layer is not easy to arrange and organising special storage facilities for old refrigerators is only now being considered. New Zealanders have to accept that there will be deficiencies in the ozone layer for years to come; wearing hats is not too difficult, surely.— Yours, etc., P. V. NEARY, Publicity officer, N.Z. Clean Air Society. August 29, 1989.
