Experts study bird ‘suicides’
NZPA-AFP New Delhi Indian experts are investigating reports that thousands of birds are flying long distances every September apparently to commit suicide in the jungles of the north-eastern state of Assam. The birds kill themselves by diving into fire pits or starving themselves in Assam’s Jatinga forest, and the Federal Zoological Survey of India (Z. 5.1. has launched a project to prevent the suicides. The state’s wildlife experts have joined Federal investigators hunting for an explanation to the unexplained annual rite Involving several dozen species. Z.S.I. experts said they had found evidence that birds from as far away as India’s plains travelled to Assam to die.
